$2 Billion Payment is expected by PTCL and Cellular License Renewal

Government treasury is going to receive $2 billion from the PTCL Privatization issue and license renewal of cellular licenses. For that government has set a committee to check out and resolve the issues of PTCL privatization and cellular licenses renewal of three cellular companies which is going to expire this year.

Government is about to get $800 million after solving the much-awaited issue on the account of PTCL privatization. Additionally, three cellular mobile companies are to renew their licenses after the expiry of 15 years license agreement that held in 2004. The process has been stared and will be done by the end of this year.

Other two operators, Ufone and Mobilink have already gone through the process of license renewal for $291 million each. And Zong, Telenor, and Warid are due this year. The other two Mobilink and Ufone will get their renewal in 2022 and 2029 respectively.

A new framework by telecom authority is expected which will define the changes in the agreement. This is because Telenor has asked for some changes in terms of new agreement while other two have accepted it as it was. PTA has hired a consultant to study the existing framework and the international best on to bring something good with renewal.

Final Words

When the license renewal procedure will proceed, PTA is supposed to make some recommendations to the federal government within the timelines specified in the licenses. Otherwise, specific pricing methods will be introduced for microwave and mobile spectrum. The fee will be determined under the terms of the applicable license.
